We typically like to solder on a copper female adapter and then screw in a male PVC adapter then add in a PVC smiling smiley, lolz.

Another option you might consider is using a regular no hub on the outside of the fitting. That means, you should cut the pipe off flush with the fitting which is thicker than the pipe and almost the same diameter as the PVC, then no hub to the fitting and the pipe.

A friend of mine recommends using  a 1 1/2″ PVC to 1 1/4″ PVC Fernco Coupling in that situation. But, I have never tried this.
