Character shoes are so damn comfortable and I miss mine. Yes, you can wear them for an “every day” heel wear. I’d say go right ahead and slip them on as far as they aren’t worn TOO frequently and worn on the right kind of days too.
They’re great to wear for a short period of time. Now, you may not like it because walking down the street in thin leather soles may feel uncomfortable as you’ll feel every little nook and cranny of the flooring you walk on – imagine cobblestone or gravel.
Naturally, not all dance shoes are like this, some are more like regular shoes, so your mileage may vary.
Can You Wear Character (Stage) Shoes Outside?
Yes, you can, but if you are a ballroom dancer with proper soft leather soles then you will damage the soles.
Personally, depending on the price of the shoe, I don’t it’ll be wise to buy these for daily wear. Remember, they aren’t made for the stage.
Can I wear dance shoes to walk down the street?
You may wear dance shoes to walk down the street but I do not recommend them for the following reasons:
- The soles aren’t made to be used on asphalt and concrete
- You are not expected to wear street shoes on a dance floor
- If you do, it might track in debris and dirt that would damage it. That is why they ask you to change from your street shoes into your dance shoes before stepping out on the floor.

Can Ballroom Dance Shoes Be Worn Outside?
Ballroom dance shoes are MADE to be WORN OUTSIDE. It is UNWISE to wear them outside.
Once you wear your ballroom dance shoes outside, they will begin to lose the very thing that they are designed to do – use grip to provide traction on the dance floor.
