So, the question should not be “is the cage big enough” because frankly, no. No cage is ever big enough. However, there are standards you need to look for when selecting a cage.

But the biggest question still is: What is the biggest cage I can afford that I have room for?

The best size cage for green cheek conure is one that is at least 1.5-2 inches as wide as their wingspan, and at least as deep as their wingspan.

What size of cage do you need for a green cheek conure? A green cheek has an average wingspan of 13.5” so their cage should be not be lower than 24” wide.

Remember, you’d be placing things in the cage besides the bird. So, you will need to buy cages with the biggest room so it doesn’t appear cramped once the toys, bows, bird, perches etc. is kept inside.

Avoid cages that are 18×13”. Those are cruel cages for the birds and are made by comapn9es who like to take advantage of people new to birds and without good sources of information.

I recommend looking up “flight cages”. They typically are around 30 inches wide and 18 inches deep, and generally run from $100-$250 depending on the brand.

Prevue makes some cheap ones. Yaheetech make the best ones. Other budget brands would be A&E, and HQ. King’s and Midwest/Avian Adventures will usually cost more.

Plus, depth and space are more than height. Remember, birds fly like aero planes, not like helicopters.

Avoid cages with too much ornamental metalwork – there should be no spots where a bird can get a head or body parts stuck through the bars and then have that space narrow if they slide or fall down, i.e, no “V” shaped bar arrangements anywhere on the cage.

It’s good to have both horizontal and vertical bars as horizontal are more fun to climb but vertical are more fun to slide down, haha.

If you’re not under a budget, stainless steel cages are the simplest to clean. As long as it’s fairly sturdy and you can get it outside easily, though, a power sprayer makes easy work of cleaning any sort of cage
